Gastroenterology
Introduction
In the Department of Gastroenterology, we treat diseases of the digestive tract (esophagus, stomach, duodenum, small intestine, large intestine), liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. In endoscopic examinations, we perform high-precision examinations and treatments using cutting-edge equipment. In addition, we perform endoscopic examinations using sedatives and painkillers to reduce the pain of endoscopic examinations and make the examinations more comfortable and safe for patients.
In endoscopic treatment, we not only perform endoscopic treatment of digestive tract cancer, but also perform emergency endoscopy for digestive tract bleeding, endoscopic treatment of common bile duct stones, and endoscopic treatment of pancreatic and biliary tract diseases such as bile duct stent placement for jaundice. We are particularly active in the treatment of biliary and pancreatic diseases, and are certified as a leading facility by the Japan Biliary Association and the Japan Pancreas Society.

Characteristics of this department
In addition to the digestive tract, such as the esophagus, stomach, large intestine, and small intestine, we diagnose and treat digestive diseases of the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.
When a digestive disease is suspected, it is important to accurately diagnose the disease and select the appropriate treatment. In our hospital, we perform various imaging diagnostics such as abdominal ultrasound and CT scans, as well as the latest endoscopic examinations, to provide highly accurate diagnoses and appropriate treatment based on those results.
For example, in the area of the biliary tract and pancreas, we have introduced endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) in addition to various imaging diagnostics, and strive to detect pancreatic and biliary tract cancer, which is said to be difficult to treat, early by performing precise diagnoses.
In addition, as a digestive center, we work in cooperation with the gastrointestinal surgery and radiology departments to provide consistent diagnosis and treatment from pre- to post-operatively.
In addition, we also focus on endoscopic treatment, and actively perform endoscopic treatments such as endoscopic resection (ESD) for early gastric cancer and early colon cancer, which is a minimally invasive treatment that puts less strain on the body, emergency endoscopic treatments such as endoscopic hemostasis for digestive tract bleeding, and endoscopic lithotripsy for bile duct stones. We also perform EUS-FNA, which uses EUS to extract cells, and endoscopic ultrasound treatment (Interventional EUS), which applies this technology to treat liver disease.
In recent years, the focus of treatment for liver disease has shifted from inpatient to outpatient care. We strive to provide treatment that is minimally burdensome for patients with viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver disease, and fatty liver disease. For hepatocellular carcinoma, we provide multidisciplinary treatment in collaboration with the Department of Gastroenterological Surgery and the Department of Radiology. We also actively perform systemic chemotherapy using immune checkpoint inhibitors and molecular targeted drugs.
